When no one is around

I've noticed that when I'm thinking of a number between one and ten, it's usually because I want someone to guess that number. When there's no one around to guess my number, I usually think of one in the upper 40's or 50's, and keep it to myself.

Placed above, it makes things small.
Placed beside, it makes small things greater.
In matters that count, it always comes first.
Where others increase, it keeps all things the same.
What is it?

answer: not so quick....think about it!

I agree. When I am thinking of a number between 1 and 2, I am hoping the answer isn't 3.
