This long weekend I experienced a number of new things, two of which I shall mention here... seven or eight of which I shall never mention to anyone, ever. I spent the weekend drinking like a fish, and even acting like a fish in some respects. Sunday was spent kayaking down the Pee Dee River - shallow as hell, but deep enough in some spots to take a nice cool swim. A couple days earlier I joined a group of friends on a hashing expedition. Don't know what hashing is? Google knows. Here's the gist - you get together with some friends, one of whom creates a trail with route indicators (and false route indicators) along the way. After several beers, the rest of the crew attempts to follow that trail, which has along the way a cooler full of beer and a bottle of Jack Daniels. After a few hours of drunken path-walking through city streets, behind abandoned buildings, through sewers and creeks, up steep inclines, through people's family picnics, we ended up back where we started - in a circle of lawn chairs drinking beer. It was a Boston marathon for alcoholics. A massive hangover, some ruined socks, bug bites, and sunburns were the trophies of the weekend. Next weekend I plan to sit at home, make a nice croissant for breakfast and read the weekend edition of the Wall Street Journal in my cool bug free livingroom.
